Education is the gateway to an independent, self-reliant life. That is why it has to function stably – even in times of crisis.
Graz (OTS) – Children and young people with disabilities have the right to an education without discrimination in an inclusive education system.
The corona pandemic and the school lockdowns have increasingly shown that there is a need for action.
Elisabeth Ginthör-Kalcsics, the President of Lebenshilfe Steiermark, emphasizes: “The educational offer should be consistently inclusive and no one should be excluded.”
right to education
The UN Convention gives up the right inclusive education before, i.e. the right to active participation of people with disabilities in the general education system.
Many steps are still required to implement this right. We therefore call on all those responsible to work hard on the necessary framework conditions.
The support offers must be decisively improved:
- The system should be designed simply.
- All children and pupils with disabilities should get the support they need.
- The support must be reliably available for all educational activities.
No matter where these take place: in kindergarten, at school, at home with distance learning, on excursions, school events, etc. - All professional groups involved must work well together.
That means: Your tasks are well coordinated and the financing is secured accordingly. - Technical aids facilitate communication.
The education system ensures that children and young people with disabilities in particular have access to these aids and learn to use them well.
President Ginthör-Kalcsics: “It is important that everyone really has the opportunity to receive a good, inclusive education and to be able to learn new things for a lifetime.”
