Suara.com – Many people always think that a stomachache is always related to the stomach, like a disease GERD atau gastroesophageal reflux disease.
But there is also a disease called Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), a type of chronic inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract. Then what is the difference between GERD and IBD?
Prof. dr. Marcellus Simadibrata, Internal Medicine Specialist and Consultant Gastroenterology Hepatology, RSCM-FKUI, said the difference between the two diseases lies in the source of the disease.
GERD is a disease that originates from upper digestion, due to the presence of stomach acid back up and can spread to various organs, such as the throat, lungs to polyps or nose.

“Meanwhile, IBD is a disease of the lower gastrointestinal tract, but it can also enter chronic disease, the whole upper and lower digestion,” said Prof. Marcellus in a virtual discussion, Saturday (22/5/2021).
In terms of symptoms, people with GERD often experience shortness of breath, heartburn, bloating, body aches, and coughing.
Meanwhile, IBD, due to a disease that triggers inflammation, is indicated when there is blood discharge from the body such as diarrhea, abdominal pain or menstrual bleeding.
Things to watch out for, IBD can cause psychological and interpersonal problems in patients or mental health problems.
Mental problems such as loss of bowel control, fatigue, decreased body image, fear of sexual inability, social isolation from addiction, worry and feeling dirty.
