Las Vegas (Nevada) police said Thursday that they investigated an incident between the security team of French basketball player Victor Wembanyama, the new NBA jewel, and pop star Britney Spears.
Wembanyama, chosen in June as number one in the NBA Draft by the San Antonio Spurs, is in Las Vegas to play his first games with his new team in the Summer League (Summer League).
On Wednesday night, the 2.22m tall young center was recognized at the entrance of a restaurant by a group of people including Britney Spears.
The singer, according to newspaper reports, was pushed by a member of Wembanyama security who, according to the singer’s husband, Sam Asghari, behaved “violently” and “out of control”.
Following his training session on Thursday, Wembanyama told reporters that he only found out Spears was involved in the incident a few hours after his dinner.
“I was walking with some security team members to a restaurant. We were in a lobby and there were a lot of people, some people (were) calling me, obviously,” he recounted.
One “person was calling me ‘Sir, Sir’ and he grabbed me from behind so I didn’t see what happened because I was walking and we had talked about not stopping,” said 19-year-old ‘Wemby’. “I only know that the security guards pushed her, I don’t know how hard.”
Through a text on her Instagram account, Spears said that she only wanted to greet the player and questioned some aspects of Wembanyama’s version.
“Traumatic experiences are not new to me, but I was not prepared for what happened to me last night. I recognized a jock in my hotel lobby on my way to dinner. Later I went to a restaurant in another hotel and turned him over. Let’s see. I decided to go up to him and congratulate him on his success. He was making a lot of noise, so I tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention. I know the player’s statement that I grabbed him from behind, but I just I tapped him on the shoulder. Then his security punched me in the face without looking back, in front of a crowd. They nearly knocked me off my feet and knocked my glasses off my face.”
In a brief statement, the Las Vegas Police Department said it investigated the incident but took no action.
“The incident has been documented in a police report and no arrests or citations have been issued. No further details will be provided at this time.”
