The number of corona infections in Cologne has risen slightly again and the incidence is again above 10. NRW-wide relaxations, which, among other things, affect the mask requirement, will therefore not come into force for the time being.
The corona pandemic still plays a role in everyday life in the cathedral city. How many infected are there? What are the rules? What do Cologne residents currently need to know about the Covid 19 situation.
Wednesday, July 7th: NRW loosens measures for incidence below ten
In North Rhine-Westphalia, the corona restrictions in counties and urban districts with a stable seven-day incidence below ten are being relaxed significantly. The state government is introducing a new “incidence level zero” in the new Corona Protection Ordinance, said Health Minister Karl-Josef Laumann (CDU) on Wednesday in Düsseldorf. The regulation applies from Friday.
In many areas, masks and keeping your distance are then just a recommendation. The mask requirement remains in some areas such as in buses and trains, retail, medical practices, taxis and school transport, so Laumann. Employees with close customer contact such as body-hugging services or service staff in the catering industry would still have to wear a mask or have a negative test certificate.
At larger private events, minimum distances and mask requirements can be waived, even if the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in seven days is less than ten across the country and the participants have tested negative.
Folk festivals, town, village and rifle festivals are again allowed from Friday if the national incidence and also the incidence in the respective municipality is below ten. The participants must have a negative test certificate with them. Organizers should make random checks.
In Cologne, the incidence was slightly over ten on Wednesday – so the previous restrictions will remain here for the time being.
Incidence in Cologne rises above 10
The Robert Koch Institute showed a seven-day incidence of 10.6 in Cologne for Wednesday. 16 new cases were reported. The number of detected infections since the beginning of the pandemic rose to 53,595. The number of deaths remained unchanged at 721.
Cologne vaccination doctor wants to be fined for truants
In June alone, 50,000 people canceled their vaccination appointments in the vaccination centers in the area of the North Rhine Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians. In Cologne, around two to five percent of appointments are missed every day. In the doctor’s offices it looks similar: “This is appointment terror, what we are experiencing,” said the Cologne vaccination doctor Jürgen Zastrow the “Express”.
So far, he has carried out 4,000 vaccinations in his ENT practice, but many of their appointments no longer fit the bill. Then there are requests for postponement, refusals – and also people who simply do not come. Each of the cases means an effort for the staff in the practice, but Zastrow considers skipping appointments to be the worst – which is why he is also a fine to show patients that it is not possible. That shouldn’t be a punishment. “We just want to make it clear to people that they cause an unbelievable amount of work on the other side,” continued Zastrow.

No more mask requirement outdoors in Cologne
In Cologne, too, there is no longer a requirement to wear a mask outside. So far, the metropolis had formed an exception because the crisis team had extended the mask requirement in public space with a general decree. However, this ended on Tuesday night at midnight.
Now only the state’s Corona Protection Ordinance applies in Cologne, said a spokesman for the city. This means that the mask requirement is no longer required outdoors, unless, for example, you are standing in a queue in front of a shop. In closed rooms such as buses and trains, in shops and medical practices, a mask must be worn.
Special rules end from midnight
The special corona rules for Cologne end on Tuesday at midnight. The general decree of the city regarding alcohol and lingering bans expires – and with it the tightening of the mask requirement. A mask then no longer has to be worn outdoors in Cologne.
In general, the rules of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (opening level 1) apply in the city from Tuesday. From midnight, alcohol can be drunk outside of gastronomic establishments for the first time. Even at hotspots such as the Aachener Weiher, people are allowed to stay again, subject to the distance and contact rules, which was previously prohibited.
If the number of infections increases, the city of Cologne can order tightening again at any time.

Thursday, June 24th: Dates for everyone at the vaccination center
Cologne residents who want to be vaccinated against the coronavirus can book an appointment at the vaccination center from Saturday – regardless of the prioritization group. This applies to all vaccination centers in North Rhine-Westphalia, announced Health Minister Karl-Josef Laumann (CDU) on Thursday in Düsseldorf. Until now, appointments in the 53 vaccination centers across the country were tied to age and occupational groups.
