Inauguration of the XXX National Biennial of Visual Arts Celebrating Dominican Art and Honoring Jorge Pineda

This Saturday, August 26, la XXX will be inaugurated National Biennial of Visual Arts at the Museum of Modern Art (MAM), located in the Plaza de Cultura Juan Pablo Duarte, at 6:00 in the afternoon.

Artists and lovers of visual arts will be able to enjoy this event, the most important in the dominican artwhose thirtieth edition is dedicated to the master Jorge Pineda. Immediately after opening the Biennial, the tribute to Pineda “New Anatomies” will be inaugurated, which includes drawings, paintings and installations that were made by the renowned artist between 1990 and 2015.

This XXX Biennial will exhibit 148 works chosen by the Selection Jury, made up of Pilar Lladó, Fermín Ceballos and Carlos Sangiovanni, out of a total of 718 pieces registered by the 388 artists who responded to the call.

On October 17, almost two months after his inaugurationthe award ceremony will be held, in which the nine winners chosen by the Award Jury and a grand prize awarded by the Grand Jury, which will be made up of the Selection Jury and the Award Jury, will be announced.

Of the ten winners, nine will get a prize of 300,000 pesos, while the grand prize will be endowed with one million pesos. For the first time, all participating works will receive a certificate.

The Organizing Committee has provided for the closure of this XXX National Biennial of Visual Arts for December 15, the date on which, in addition to being awarded the ten prizes to the winning works, the one that will obtain the public prize will be revealed

Among the selected creations are 58 paintings, 6 ceramics, 3 plastic actions, 25 installations, 1 mixed media work, 3 videos, 1 graphic work, 11 sculptures, 17 photographs and 23 drawings.

The selection jury is made up of Pilar Lladó, a Spanish artist and collector who chairs the International Patronage Council and the Friends of the Reina Sofía Museum Foundation, and is also a member of the Reina Sofía Museum Foundation Board of Trustees, who pointed out that the jury has carried out “truly exhaustive work in the selection of these works, which inevitably has to be restrictive”, while highlighting the quality of the creations presented.

On his side, Fermín Ceballos is a renowned Dominican artist, specialized in ceramics, although he has also worked in sculpture, drawing, installations and video, and has been awarded various prizes, who declared that “assuming the responsibility of selecting the works that will participate in the XXX Visual Arts Biennial has been an honor and a challenge”.

The third member of the jury is Carlos Sangiovanni, a Dominican artist, educator and graphic creator, distinguished with numerous awards, whose creative work includes ceramics, textiles, painting, engraving, screen printing and photography, who indicated that this is the second time that he is part of the selection jury of this event.

“New Anatomies”, a tribute to Jorge Pineda

The National Biennial of Visual Arts will present “New Anatomies”, in homage to the visual artist Jorge Pinedawhich will be inaugurated on the same Saturday in August on the first floor of the Museum of Modern Art, simultaneously with the exhibition of the selected works at the XXX National Biennial of Visual Arts 2023.

Said exhibition, coordinated by Henry Mercedes Vales, includes drawings, paintings and installations that were made by the master Pineda between 1990 and 2015.

“New Anatomies” has as its central axis a painting of the same name, five meters long, made on both sides of the paper, which was originally exhibited at the Ibero-American Biennial of Lima, an exhibition curated by Luis Lama Mansur, critic and manager Dominican artist residing in Peru.

Organizing Commission

The Organizing Commission of the XXX National Biennial of Visual Arts It is made up of the vice ministers for Creativity and Artistic Training, Giovanny Cruz, and for Cultural Heritage, Gamal Michelén; the director of the MAM, Federico Fondeur; the director of the National Gallery of Fine Arts, Marianne de Tolentino, and the president of the Dominican College of Plastic Artists, José Sejo.

Also part of said commission are the president of the Dominican Association of Art Critics, Guadalupe Casasnovas; the president of the Dominican Association of Art Galleries, Juan Julio Bodden Leroux, and the director of the UASD School of Art Criticism and History, Plinio Chahín.

In the same way, other members of the same are the curator of the MAM, Ana Agelán Fernández; the coordinator of the Technical Unit for Culture of the Chamber of Deputies, Abil Peralta Agüero; the independent cultural manager Salvador Bergés, and María Amalia León, representative of the León Center.

Jorge Pineda

4 Jorge Pineda was born on September 24, 1961, in the province of Barahona, Dominican Republic. He was a visual artist and stage director. His work is part of several public and private collections, both in the Dominican Republic and internationally, including: the Museum of Contemporary Art of Castilla y León; IVAM (Valencian Institute of Modern Art); Patricia Phells de Cisneros Collection; and DA2 (Museum of Contemporary Art of Salamanca). Maestro Pineda passed away at 1:40 in the morning of February 16, 2023, after battling health problems that kept him away from the artistic stages. His death caused grief in the country and the cultural community.
