Opening of a new infectious and tropical diseases building in Montpellier from February 2, 2021
On January 21, the inauguration of the new building of the Infectious and Tropical Diseases Service took place in the presence of Mayor Michaël Delafosse, Professor Jacques Reynes * coordinating doctor of this service, Professor Vincent Le Moing, Dr David Morquin – Mr. Thomas Le Ludec Director General of the CHU, and Prof. Patrice Taourel, President of the CME (Medical Commission of the University Hospital of Montpellier).
It’s all in one, located in La Colombière hospital. Expected for about twenty years, the cost of the work amounts to 10 million euros for an area of 3000 square meters with the possibility of extension without blocking operation. It was designed to provide 18,500 consultations per year, and 7,000 hospital days.
Historically, this service was located in the Pasteur pavilion of the Saint Eloi hospital, after the 1970s, only hospitalizations remained there, consultations and clinical research were moved to Gui hospital in Chauliac.
From its official opening on February 2, this new building will therefore bring together the three sectors: consultations, hospitalization, and research spread over three levels:
The ground floor is devoted to admissions, consultations and samples, as well as screening and vaccination for travelers, whose route is traced in order to avoid entering the premises.
Hospitalization is located on the first floor, with 23 beds, two of which are for highly contagious diseases and one for day hospitalization. A specific air treatment system is planned, as well as airlocks so that caregivers can wear protective clothing before entering the room.
The second floor is reserved for medical research and the COREVIH d’Occitanie (Coordinating Committee for the fight against sexually transmitted infections and HIV). Equipped with two rooms, one for collegial meetings and the other for videoconferencing.
Contaminating diseases require special management, as they can be highly infectious, explains Professor Reynes. This structure includes rooms with a reinforced level of security, with a space dedicated to research, education and prevention. Here we do not count his hours for the care of patients.
Mayor M. Delafosse expresses his gratitude to the team, and recognizes that the hospital is a remarkable force. The Town Hall will always be next to the university hospital center. Moreover, the director of the hospital Mr. Le Ludec is invited to the next municipal council to present the white paper which represents the roadmap for the ten years to come.
