He indicated that the idea is to promote art as an element of unity among the Mexican community. “It’s very difficult to do without that unit,” she said.
“The purpose is to take it wherever we can because we are working for our communities, so that young people see that this is also a job, a profession and that through art, painting, we can express what we want to say,” he added. Sibaja, who was born in Oaxaca and exhibits his work “Azul Cielo” in which the Catrina (representation of death) embraces a xoloitzcuintle, a peculiar breed of hairless Mexican dog.
He recalled that the Mayans believed that these dogs guided the person who died to the place where the dead go. “That’s why she’s with the Catrina, it’s a self-portrait,” he said, adding that the flowers that surround the Catrina are those that embroider the dresses of the women of her native Isthmus of Tehuantepec, a region between the states of Oaxaca and Veracruz.
“There are people who learn by reading, others by listening and others by visualizing. Art is for learning through visualization and it is a form of expression in which we can say whatever we want”, a message that continues to be present even after death, indicated the artist.
He highlighted that “Corazón Migrante”, which is full of vibrant colors, speaks of the traditions of Mexico. and that many of the artists have spent years dedicated to their art.
“Corazón Migrante” is shown in the Octavio Paz room of the Mexican Consulate in Manhattan.
Consul Jorge Islas López told EFE that although it is not the first consulate “it is one of the most representative” given that New York “is a window to the cultural world” and stressed that “we are seeing the expression of our people who are already part of of a binational culture. They are from Mexico, yes, but they are also from here.”
He also stressed that this exhibition marks the reopening of the Octavio Paz gallery, which remained closed out of respect for the Mexicans who died during the covid pandemic in New York.
“This room had about 450 urns of Mexicans who died from the covid. In this place there were tables stacked with the urns of their ashes. We had not opened it due to mourning, pain, health decisions, but what better way to reopen it with the art of our people,” he said.
