Inaugurated New York governor after winning the midterm elections

New York, Jan. 1 New York Governor, Democrat Kathy Hochul, was sworn in on Sunday after winning the midterm elections last November for the position she had held since mid-2021 following her predecessor Andrew Cuomo’s resignation over a scandal of sexual harassment.

Hochul, 64 and who was named the state’s first female governor, reached another milestone today as she became the first female governor elected by vote, though during her speech in Albany -the capital city- she downplayed the fact and said assured that he had not arrived to make history, but to generate “a change”.

A new record for female governors was set in the US midterm elections and this year begins.

A total of twelve states will be led by a woman, breaking the previous record of nine female governors set in 2004 and which was repeated since then.

Hochul, from the moderate wing of the party, did not make a dent in his agenda for the next four years, as he will do so at the end of the month in his “State of the State” speech, but he advocated “unity” and indicated that among his priorities are the creation of job opportunities and the fight against violence and hate crimes.

Two other women elected to state governor for the first time since the November election are Republican Sarah Huckabee Sanders, of Arkansas, and Democrat Maura Healey, of Massachusetts, who will take office on January 10 and January 5, respectively. .
