JAKARTA – The discovery of antibiotics in the mid-20th century has brought major changes to the management and therapy of bacterial infections. The use of antibiotics can help cure infections, and since then antibiotics have become a cure for millions of people.
However, the inappropriate use of antibiotics in various sectors can cause antimicrobial resistance (AMR), namely the resistance of microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi to antimicrobial drugs, which were previously effective for the treatment of infections.

“Controlling AMR in infected patients in the Intensive Care Unit is important. If not controlled, AMR can lead to ineffectiveness in handling infections,” said Chairman of the Indonesian Infection Control Association (Perdalin) Prof. Dr. dr. Hindra Irawan Satari, Sp.A (K), M.TropPaed, in a webinar Thursday (7/10).
Infections accompanied by AMR can cause patients to stay longer in hospital, expensive care and treatment costs, and even death. Until now, this disturbance is a challenge in the field of human health and animal health on a global scale, which needs to be suppressed immediately.
“To achieve this, it is critical to emphasize a One Health approach for society that involves the coordination of multiple sectors and international actors, including well-informed human and animal health, agricultural, financial, environmental and consumer experts,” he said.
