Mexico City, The Federal Commission for the Protection against Health Risks (Cofepris) must publish information on the 10 medicines with the most complaints for falsification and the number of health complaints in this matter.
This was determined by the National Institute of Transparency, Access to Information and Protection of Personal Data (INAI), after resolving the request for information made by an individual who asked to know which are the 10 most counterfeit drugs circulating in the country.
Through a statement, the Institute detailed that a person asked Cofepris to know the information on counterfeit medicines between 2018 and August 2024 and the 10 medicines with the most complaints for falsification.
However, the government body did not respond to the request, so the individual filed an appeal for review with the INAI.
During the complaint processing, Cofepris provided some of the information about the complaints.
The case was analyzed by the presentation of Commissioner Blanca Lilia Ibarra Cadena, and it was found that Cofepris has previously provided information on the marketing of false medications for the treatment of diseases such as cancer, arthritis, glaucoma and arteriosclerosis.
Upon learning of the results of the analysis of the presentation, the INAI plenary session determined that Cofepris must exhaustively search for the requested information and deliver it.
“This matter shows us the importance of the right to know for the enjoyment and enjoyment of the right to health, so that people who require medications know both those that are frequently falsified and those that have the most complaints before Cofepris, which is the authority on the matter,” said Ibarra Cadena when presenting the case before the plenary session.
He added that the requested information will help people, before buying drugs, know which ones they need to be more careful with to avoid purchasing fake ones, which can affect their health.
Unanimously, the INAI plenary session ordered Cofepris to respond to the aforementioned request for information and deliver it to the requesting person.
