Inadequate Morgue Facilities in Gaza: Hospital Uses Ice Cream Truck as Makeshift Morgue – Crisis in Gaza

Jakarta

A hospital in Gaza is using an ice cream truck from a local factory as a makeshift morgue to supplement its overcrowded hospital morgue.

Yasser Khatab, a forensic pathologist at al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, said in a video message sent to CNN on Saturday (14/10/2023) that the Martyrs Hospital in Deir al Balah was unable to accommodate the increasing number of dead.

Khatab added that some bodies were still stored for days before being collected for burial. Echoing a plea for help, the forensic pathologist stressed that Gaza is in crisis.

“Gaza needs help,” Khatab said, explaining the need for mortuary refrigerators and medical equipment as well as “coffins and equipment for handling bodies.”

In the video circulating, he said that the hospital morgue was small and cramped and unable to accommodate many fatalities. The hospital administration was forced to bring food refrigerators from the Al-Awda factory to store the bodies.

“The old equipment was inadequate and of poor quality, so the hospital was forced to bring in an extra cold refrigerator to store bodies in it,” he said later.

For additional information, Israel manages most of the electricity, water and fuel in the Palestinian territories, and has imposed a strict land, sea and air blockade on Gaza since Hamas took control of the territory.

Israel used to allow some trade and humanitarian aid through the two crossings it controls in Gaza, but it launched a complete blockade of essential goods after Hamas’ latest terror attacks.
