Inabie waits for the DR School Food and Nutrition Law

Hunger is zero in educational centers under the School Feeding Program of the Dominican Republic, which translates into a direct impact on around 20% of the general population, but the School Food and Nutrition Law is needed to sustain it, said the executive director of the National Student Welfare Institute (Inabie).Victor Castro.

He offered the information at the First National Forum on School Feeding within the framework of World Food Day, together with the Chamber of Deputies, the Parliamentary Front Against Hunger and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), who They reiterated the importance of meeting in the Dominican Republic.

The event was held in the Hugo Tolentino Dipp Hall of the Chamber of Deputies and brought together legislators, experts and representatives of various organizations.

They highlighted the need for the law to improve health, academic performance and equity among the country’s students, as well as its positive impact on reducing hunger and malnutrition indicators and transforming food systems.

The high-level forum was also headed by the Minister of Public Health, Víctor Atallah; the coordinator of the Parliamentary Front against Hunger, Soraya Suárez, the deputy Mercedes Cordero Zorrilla representing the president of the Lower House, Alfredo Pacheco; the representative in the Dominican Republic of the FAO, Rodrigo Castañeda and the representative of the United Nations World Food Program, Gabriela Alvarado.

Fernanda Pacobahybapresident of the National Fund for the Development of Education (FNDE) of Brazil, presented the success of her country’s National School Feeding Program, highlighting how this program has improved the nutrition and well-being of students.

Likewise, Representative Jairo Flores from Guatemala shared his experience about the process carried out for the approval of the School Feeding Law in his country.
