In Zwickau, where the Trabants were formed, they will produce electric cars

Production of cars in the factory in Zwickau, Saxony (Czech: Cvikov) began in 1904 with the Horch car manufacturer, but cars with the Audi logo also left its gates, DKW or IFA. He has been born here since 1957 one beloved, the other hated Trabant – over 3 million of them were created here!

In 1990, the giant Volkswagen took over the factory and produced Pola, Golfy and Passaty with an internal combustion engine. The definitely last one now – on Friday 26 June – was the Volkswagen Golf R Variant with a 300-horsepower two-liter petrol pearl white Oryx, which traveled to a customer in Germany.

After 116 years, this factory ends with internal combustion engines and enters a new era of electromobility. Extensive refurbishment and modernization will now follow, including retraining of employees (total investment in the transformation has reached 1.2 billion euros), and by the end of the year new purely electric SUV ID.4.

In the course of 2021, other electric cars from the sister brands Audi and Seat will be gradually added, and a total of six different models should be produced here on the common MEB platform (Czech Škoda Enyaq will be produced in Mladá Boleslav). The planned annual capacity will increase to 330,000 units (in addition, bodies for luxury SUVs from Lamborghini and Bentley will still be produced here).

If this happens, we will see it in the coming years…
