Every year they want us to have as thick a blanket of snow as possible for the festival of love. But unfortunately it often stays with the wish. The portal Warenvergleich.de has analyzed how often there has been a “white Christmas” since 1975 and had to realize that a snowy Christmas is unfortunately the exception.
Even if the calendar says otherwise: the right winter feeling only arises when it snows for the first time. The majority of Germans see it that way: 70 percent of all respondents want cold and snowy Christmas weather, as a survey by the IfD Allensbach showed.
Looking back over the past 46 years, Warenvergleich.de editor Désirée Rossa states: “When looking at the results of the first snowfall, it becomes clear that there was less ‘White Christmas’ in metropolitan areas than in rural regions or small towns.”

In 1st place: Munich
The Bavarian capital has made it onto the podium with a total of 14 snowfalls since 1975. This is followed by Potsdam with ten (second place) and Erfurt with nine snowfalls (third place). Magdeburg and Stuttgart share fourth place with seven “White Christmas” each.
In fifth place with six snowfalls each at Christmas: Leipzig, Dresden and Hamburg. Hannover, Saarbrücken and Schwerin (sixth place) come 5 times each. It only snowed four times at Christmas in Mainz, Berlin, Bremen, Wiesbaden and Frankfurt am Main – seventh place. The taillights are Kiel and Düsseldorf (three times each, eighth place) and Cologne (two times, ninth place).
“White Christmas” is more common in eastern Germany
If you compare the geographical east side of Germany with the west side, it becomes clear that White Christmas Eve occurs far more often in the eastern half. Here it has snowed an average of 7.17 times in the past few years, whereas the average in the west is only 5.08. There is one exception, however: “Experience has shown that Munich, the southernmost state capital, always has an advantage,” explains Rossa.
