Two factors were needed to spread the 5G network more: lowering the cost of a compatible smartphone and homogeneous coverage. The first has materialized: under € 300 there are 5G smartphones.
The coverage of the network is instead another story: many frequencies will not be available before the second half of 2022, that is when the so-called “Band 700” (ie frequencies around 700 MHz) will be freed from audiovisual transmissions (when these pass to DVB-T2 signal), which currently use it. Furthermore, the spread has been slowed by the opposition of many municipalities that have issued orders to ban the installation of 5G antennas on their territory (justifying them with actually unfounded concerns for the health of citizens).
The Simplifications Decree of last year he established that mayors can no longer act contrary to national regulations on the subject of 5G; but to date in many municipalities the operators cannot yet install the antennas and are engaged in legal disputes with the individual administrations.
All the main Italian operators – Fastweb, Iliad, TIM, Vodafone and WindTre – offer their users a 5G signal, although not in all cities. The expansion of the network is under development e other cities will be reached by the end of 2021; for national coverage we will have to wait several more years.
