Prime Minister Kiril Petkov received strong support for Bulgaria’s efforts in the fight against corruption during his meetings today at the US State Department in Washington, the press service of the Council of Ministers announced.

The Prime Minister acquainted in detail his high-ranking hosts from the US government with the measures of the Cabinet to eradicate corruption, as well as with the real steps for judicial reform, the Council of Ministers clarified.

The Prime Minister’s first talks today also focused on the actions of the Bulgarian government to ensure Bulgaria’s energy independence and diversification. Petkov pointed out the efforts of the cabinet to find long-term solutions for our country, which would provide security and stability, after the unilateral termination of gas supplies by Gazprom. He stressed the potential in this direction and the importance of international cooperation, especially with the United States, on energy issues.

The American side also welcomed Bulgaria’s support for Ukraine. The Prime Minister confirmed Bulgaria’s categorical position on Russian aggression. The Prime Minister also noted the humanitarian aid that our country provides to Kyiv, as well as our decision to provide military-technical assistance to Ukraine.

At the US State Department, Petkov met with Chief Energy Adviser Amos Hochstein, Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Newland, and Sanctions Policy Coordinator Jim O’Brien.

After meeting at the State Department, the prime minister visited the White House National Security Council, where he spoke with National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan.

During his visit to Washington, Petkov will hold more talks in Congress and at the World Bank. In the US capital, the prime minister was accompanied by Energy Minister Alexander Nikolov, Defense Minister Dragomir Zakov, and Deputy Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova.
