In Warsaw, protests against a court decision that effectively bans abortion

The Polish capital, Warsaw, protested on Friday against a decision by the Constitutional Court on Thursday that effectively bans abortion in the country.

Despite the restrictions of Covid-19, several hundred people gathered in front of the courthouse and moved on to the headquarters of the ruling Law and Justice party.

A Polish court ruling states that abortion due to an embryonic defect is illegal under the constitution. In fact, this means a ban on abortion, as this is the basis for almost all legal abortions in Poland.

“No one has the right to force women into heroism. No one has the right to convict a woman of torture. Seeing your child die is something that no mother, no father, no family member will ever forget, ”quoted Barbara Novacka, a Member of the Polish Parliament.

According to the court, abortion is only allowed in Poland if it is due to rape or incest. Critics are convinced that the court’s decision will encourage illegal abortions and abortion operations abroad.
