In vitro fertilization: find out what one of its variants is about

Treatments against infertility are constantly evolving and new and more advanced techniques appear day after day. In addition to artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization, there is the embryodonation.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in the world there are around 50 million infertile couples, almost the same amount as 20 years ago. Anyway, if demographic changes are taken into account, there has been a small advance.

In low-income countries, the main reason for infertility is sexually transmitted diseases, as some end up causing blockage in the fallopian tubes. Meanwhile, in the richest states, what happens is that the search for the first child is increasingly delayed. The older a woman is, the worse her ovarian quality.

What is embryodonation

The doctor Fernando Neuspiller (MN 82815), gynecologist specialized in Reproductive Medicine and Director of IVI Buenos Aires, explained to WELFARE what this technique for fertility is about.

“It is an in vitro fertilization procedure in which, from a donated egg and a donated sperm for the couple who will receive it, embryos are generated and these are transferred to a second woman”, Illustrated the specialist.

Furthermore, Neuspiller commented that it is usually done in two ways: “In the first, two donors are used and the generated embryo is transferred; in the second, which is the most frequent, embryos remain in a clinic and the couple that had them no longer wants to conceive more children, in this way they are donated to another who needs them ”.

Regarding the frequency of this fertilization technique compared to the others, the specialist stated that “about 10 percent of couples who go to a fertilization clinic end up using this technique ”.

The embryodonation is finished using, added the specialist, when neither female gametes nor male sperm are fit for a different type of treatment or to conceive naturally.

“In Argentina there is no law that regulates any practice in assisted reproduction ”, said Neuspiller and explained that the only thing that the current regulation dictates is that the treatment must be covered.

As to the requirements to be a donor of this type, there are different types: “For example, women must be under 35 years of age and carry out clinical, psychological and hormonal studies to show that they are healthy.” As for men, they should also be young and get checkups.
