The identified crypto farm turned out to be the largest ever discovered by Ukrainian law enforcement officers.
In Vinnitsa, a farm for mining cryptocurrencies was organized directly in one of the former warehouses of the oblenergo. About it informs SBU on Thursday, 8 July.
“The attackers illegally took electrical energy from the networks of JSC Vinnitsaoblenergo. To hide their activities, they used conventional means of metering the consumption of electrical energy,” it was reported.
This is the largest clandestine crypto farm ever identified by Ukrainian law enforcement officers; almost 5 thousand pieces of computer equipment were seized on its territory.
“During authorized searches at the place of operation of the farm and at the addresses of residence of the defendants, 3,800 game consoles, more than 500 video cards, 50 processors, draft documentation on accounting for electricity consumption, notebooks, phones, flash drives were seized,” the SBU added.
According to preliminary estimates of experts, the monthly amount of losses from such activities can range from 5 to 7 million UAH.
“At the same time, illegal selection of electricity could lead to global consequences – entire quarters of Vinnitsa could remain without electricity,” the security officials said.
Now operational-investigative actions are underway to establish the full circle of persons involved in illegal activities, including the involvement of officials of Vinnitsaoblenergo JSC. Criminal proceedings have been opened under the article on the theft of water, electric or heat energy through its unauthorized use.
Recall that earlier SBU blocked the work of the mining farm… The actions of the malefactors could lead to emergency situations with uninterrupted supply of electricity to the population and enterprises.
Also, work was blocked in Kiev networks of underground cryptocurrency exchangers… The network’s monthly turnover exceeded one million dollars. The SBU says that the exchangers were used by cybercriminals for operations with cryptocurrencies and electronic money.
