In video: Pongo reveals the underside of his texts – Le Temps

In the lyrics of her songs, Pongo frequently discusses the difficulties she had to overcome in her life. In its title Start(Commence in French), the Angolan singer recounts how she was ousted by the group with which she collaborated at the time of the release of the hit Wegue Wegue. She thus sings about her fight for the copyright of this song that she herself composed. It was this betrayal that pushed her to write these words: “Begin and I will finish you,” as a warning to those who wanted to take advantage of her.

The artist also draws inspiration from his childhood memories in Angola. Her compositions, whether she sings in Portuguese, “Portuñol” or Creole, are a constant reminder of her country of origin, where contradictions collide, where some panhandle while others have fun and are partying. For Pongo, life must continue despite difficulties.
