In Very Troubled Waters: A Tepid and Forgettable Sequel to The Meg

In Very Troubled Waters (or The Meg 2 – The Trench) is therefore the sequel to the surprise success of summer 2018: In Troubled Waters ! This time Jason Statham is no longer facing one gigantic Megalodon… but three! A sequel that decides to push the delirium a little further, without however convincing.

There are consequences that we expected, and others that we did not expect: In Very Troubled Waters is obviously part of the 2nd case, both the first The Me missed all its beginnings of fun and jubilant entertainment. But following its success (more than 500 million dollars at the box office casually), Warner Bros decided to exploit the big prehistoric shark to create a sequel.

Exit Jon Turtletaub (Benjamin Gates), and hello Ben Wheatley (High-Rise, Free Fire). We always find this good old Jason Statham as an ecosystem vigilante, alongside other oceanographers from the Mana One station. With the opening of a new center hosting the first domesticated Megalodon, our team of researchers decides to venture into a gigantic underwater pit.

And what must happen will actually happen: the famous Megalodon escapes, and the scientists of Mana One will find themselves trapped several tens of kilometers under the surface following a sabotage orchestrated by a group of mercenaries. If that weren’t enough: two other gigantic Megalodons are threatening to join an archipelago where more than a hundred holidaymakers are present…

In Very Flat Waters

You guessed it, En Eaux Très Troubles adapts the adage “we take the same and start over”. After a short cretaceous prologue (to show that “Big Shark is more dangerous than a T-Rex”), The Me 2 An extremely simple program quickly unfolds: the characters are stuck under the sea, must reach a station and then find a way to reach dry land. And this without being bitten by Megalodon!

And just like the first installment, In Very Troubled Waters unfortunately turns out to be as bland as it is impersonalwhile the scenario is articulated as a Abyss trending Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park) of the poor. Worse, visually the footage ultimately leaves little room for real tangible physicality (Statham able to snorkel without exploding under pressure), and the danger remains with absent subscribers.

The Megalodons generally remain two ex machinas useful to the scenario, gradually removing from the equation a few non-characters never developed who we don’t care about. Another downside: a PG-13 classification (film prohibited for children under 13 unaccompanied in the USA) prohibiting any explicit bloodshed. No regressive or transgressive pleasure in sight !

The more Megalocon, the better

Nevertheless, In Very Troubled Waters begins to wake up during its last act of about 35 min, taking place on the surface. The gonzo machinery then becomes less timorous, and great moviegoers will necessarily appreciate seeing Jason Statham spearing the big shark on his jet-ski, prehistoric reptiles prey on the innocent vacationer, or influence being eaten greedily.

A more entertaining character therefore, while The Me 2 takes on the air of Mage Shark vs Giant Octopus during its climax. A way to glimpse the potential that this franchise would have if it did not have the posterior between 2 chairs : the bland blockbuster that takes itself seriously and the unpretentious XXL entertainment that lets go.

Casting department, nothing really notable, even if the duo Jason Statham (who plays Statham) and Wu Jing (Chinese superstar of Wolf Warrior 2 with certain sympathy capital) works rather well on the screen. For the rest, In Very Troubled Waters once again represents a certain idea of the modern Hollywood blockbuster: (very) impersonal entertainment, too cautious, and above all quite forgettable.

In Very Troubled Waters was released in cinemas on August 2, 2023

Avis

3.5 Megalo-con

En Eaux Très Troubles continues the tasteless recipe of the previous opus, without adding meat or salt. A slightly more drinkable entertainment than the previous one with a more entertaining climax, but demonstrating once again that The Meg 2 has promises of unfulfilled regressive entertainment. So not terrible!
