On this Easter Monday, a ‘vaporetto’, the inescapable bus boat from Venice, plows through the waters of the tourist lagoon to rescue the elderly of two islands to allow them in these times of pandemic to get vaccinated.

Transformed into a floating clinic for a day, one of these solid canal “buses” goes to meet people over 80 years old who live on the islands of Sant’Erasmo and Vignole.

These islands do not have a vaccination center and, moving to another can be difficult, especially for the elderly. If the elderly do not go to the vaccine, then it was decided that injectables would go to them.

The initiative has “a double objective”, explains the city of Venice in a statement. “It’s about getting people used to the idea of getting vaccinated and, at the same time, allowing older people, for whom transportation can be difficult, to do so just steps from home.”

Italy, in the middle of the vaccination campaign, uses many public places. In Naples, for example, he is vaccinated under the gaze of Titian’s magnificent princess Danae (naked), in the Capodimonte museum.

Near Milan, Italians flock to get vaccinated at the famous Monza circuit, where the Italian Formula 1 Grand Prix is held every year.

In Venice, inside the ‘vaporetto’, a small table and a chair wait in a corner, isolated to respect privacy, for those who have an appointment to be immunized and wait on the shore, protected by awnings.

“It’s pretty good,” explains Mario Cavagnis, who has just received his first dose of AstraZeneca. “It is a normal ‘vaporetto’ that they have simply turned into a small clinic.”

And how do you feel? “Right now, my arm doesn’t hurt. So far, everything is fine,” he concludes with a smile.
