In the city of Trier in western Germany, a car drove into the pedestrian zone. Four people died on the spot and several others were injured, SWR said. The cause of the incident is not clear. The drivers were detained by police.
“We detained one person and secured the car. According to initial findings, two people died. Please avoid the city center,” police said on Twitter.
According to the SWR station, at least ten are injured and there is a little girl among the four victims.
Details of the driver who entered the pedestrian zone in the historic part of the city near the border with Luxembourg are not yet available. According to the daily Bild, a Range Rover drove into people at full speed. Trier police spokesman Uwe Konz told Bild that the motive for the 51-year-old driver was not yet clear.
Mayor Wolfram Leibe said it was an “act committed in amok.”
