French is the most used language in the professional environment and Luxembourgish is the most used in the Grand Duchy’s homes.

Neglecting one’s mother tongue can jeopardize school success, but also lead to pathologies that force Portuguese children in Luxembourg to attend speech therapists. Half of the Portuguese who visit the office of ortophonist Ângela Ferreira suffer from language delays: they have such a poor vocabulary that they cannot name the most famous fruits or tell what they did during the day.

Portuguese is one of the languages ​​of choice at the International School of Differdange, a first in public education in Luxembourg, but none of the Portuguese-speaking students enrolled in primary school chose the language. Due to lack of interest in the Portuguese language, the school will start in September without a Portuguese teacher for primary school children.
