Official Pokemon Coins
–
No one can deny the role it has Pokémon as an emblem of popular culture. Its fame knows no borders and that has been the case since the first games of the franchise were launched, back in 1996. During its first years such was the fame acquired by the games that a country came to print legal tender coins with various creatures engraved in them.
On the island of Niue you can pay with Pikachu coins
Niue is a small South Pacific islandwhich maintains a status of free association with New Zealand, despite having a certain degree of self-governance. This status allows you to have two legal tender currencies: the New Zealand dollar and the niue dollarwhich is popularly known for printing limited editions of its popular culture-themed coins.
In 2001, the agency of this country in charge of printing coins decided to print a limited series of Pokémon coins worth 1 Niue dollar. On one side of the coin you could see the shield of Niue, while on the other you could see the image of several first generation Pokémon. There were five different versions, each featuring an iconic Pokémon: Pikachu, Charmander, Squirtle, Bulbasaur, and Meowth.
In addition to Pokémon, this country has printed coins with images of other very popular franchises like characters from Disney, Star Wars or Doctor Who. A way of not only conveying his passion for these licenses, but also allowing the locals to pay with their favorite characters.
The funny thing is that these coins are official, anyone can go to Niue and pay with a coin with a Charmander engraved on it. However, although the value of these coins on the island is only 1 dollar, many collectors from the rest of the world pay thousands for one of these objects so original.
