In these people, coffee prevents dementia – 2024-02-22 19:43:56

Cup of coffee? Yes please. Based on preliminary observations, coffee has an absolutely inconvenient health effect on some people. It seems to reduce the risk of developing dementia.

Finns drink an average of 3–5 cups of coffee a day, 10 kilos per person per year.

It’s really good, because some coffee drinkers also get a lower risk of dementia in honor of the coffee tooth.

This is evident from the European Journal of Epidemiology, the published study of which is reported on Duodecim’s website.

Those who drink at least four cups of coffee daily are about half as likely to develop dementia as people of the same age who do not drink coffee.

The reduced risk of dementia can be enjoyed by people whose caffeine metabolism is slow due to genetic reasons.

The findings need to be confirmed in further studies, but due to slow caffeine metabolism, caffeine remains in the body for longer, which may increase the potential health effects related to coffee and caffeine.

The study involved 6,000 people with an average age of 74, from whom data covering the entire genome was available. On average, the participants did not suffer from dementia at the start of the nine-year follow-up.

When a person drinks a cup of coffee, it takes about 45 minutes for the caffeine to be absorbed into the blood and tissues. The caffeine content is at its highest 15–120 minutes after consumption, according to the Coffee and health website maintained by the Finnish Food Industry Association’s Coffee and Roastery Association.

A person cannot decide for himself which group he belongs to: those who have the necessary genetic form or not.

Previous research

A study published in 2009 already found that drinking coffee in middle age prevents late-onset dementia. The study was the first to prove the connection.

In a pioneering study by a Finnish docent Miia Kivipellon conducted, it was found that the lowest risk of getting dementia was in middle age moderately, i.e. 3–5 cups of coffee per day. These people had a 65 percent lower risk of getting sick.

The study was carried out at the University of Kuopio in cooperation with the Stockholm Karolinska Institute and the Helsinki Institute of Health and Welfare. The research material consisted of persons who participated in the North Karelia project and the FINMONICA study in 1972, 1977, 1982 or 1987 during a middle-aged research visit. A follow-up study conducted in 1998 was completed by 1,409 people aged 65–79 after an average follow-up period of 21 years. 61 of them were diagnosed with dementia and 48 with Alzheimer’s disease
