In the video… an architect reveals the causes of rusty rebar… and explains the average age of buildings in the Gulf countries compared to Europe

Al-Marsad Newspaper: The architect Abdul Ghani Al-Jand revealed the reasons for the rusting of rebar, explaining that the average life of concrete buildings in the Kingdom and the Gulf states is between 40 and 50 years, and in the Europe it can reach 100 years.

He said in a video he posted on his “X” account that concrete structures are among the most prominent features of today’s societies, as concrete plays a vital role in placing the pressure resistance, while at the same time reinforcing bars against tension.

Al-Jand explained that although steel reinforcement addresses the weak tensile strength of concrete, it is greatly affected by moisture, which leads to rust, which is the main problem facing reinforcement. .

Al-Jand pointed out that one of the most common causes of rust is neglecting cracks or incorrect connection of the connecting wires, which may cause the reinforcing mesh to slip and degrade. the thickness of the concrete cover, resulting in exposure to rust. in the future.

He also said that water due to rain or leakage from air conditioning units or tanks could enter the concrete and reach the iron.

Al-Jand said that other sources of moisture include water leaking from tiles or sewage installations, or the presence of moisture under the building due to the high level of water in the ground.

Al-Jand also pointed out that the iron keys and iron fasteners that are widespread in our society are among the common causes of rust.
