In the United States, thousands of planes grounded because of the coronavirus

Photographer Jassen Todorov flew over several US airports and airfields to show the impact of the pandemic on the aviation sector.

Some have been gathering dust for almost a year. Photographer and aviator Jassen Todorov has traveled the United States to capture incredible aerial views of planes on the ground due to travel restrictions linked to Covid-19. It flew over the “Boneyard” near Tucson, Arizona, where the US Army Aircraft Graveyard is located with nearly 4,000 aircraft. He also photographed the logistics airport of Southern California, in San Bernardino County, California, as well as the airfields of San Bernardino and Mojave, in the same state. Each time, the same observation: tens or even hundreds of cuckoos nailed to the ground.

The air transport sector is one of the most affected globally by the coronavirus due to traffic restrictions and border closures put in place to limit its spread. The pandemic saw the number of airline passengers drop by 60% worldwide in 2020 and the near-term outlook remains grim, according to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The number of passengers, which reached 1.8 billion in 2020, fell back to the level of 2003, far from 4.5 billion in 2019, said the specialized agency of the United Nations.

The securities of the aviation sector were among the main victims across the planet of the containments and re-containments that most countries of the world had to undergo during the year 2020, most of the planes having been grounded.
