The American rescue services were working hard on Sunday, December 12, in search of possible survivors of the tornadoes that devastated the central and southern United States on Friday evening and Saturday morning. The governor of Kentucky fears that the death toll of at least 83 victims in this state alone may exceed 100. He called on residents to donate blood for the injured. The total death toll across the United States now stands at at least 93 dead.
Dozens of missing, buildings flattened as far as the eye can see, tangles of rubble: six American states have been crossed by “One of the worst tornado series” in the history of the country, lamented US President Joe Biden, describing their devastation “Unimaginable tragedy”.
Kentucky was the most bereaved by this violent meteorological phenomenon, particularly affecting the immense American plains, black columns sweeping the ground, illuminated by intermittent lightning.
“The devastation is incomparable with anything I have seen in my life, and I find it difficult to find the words to describe it”, said Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear.
Kentucky was swept over 200 miles by one of the longest tornadoes on record in the United States.
In Mayfield, a village of 10,000 inhabitants located at the epicenter of the disaster, the heart of the city resembles “To a pile of matches”, Mayor Kathy O’Nan said on CNN.
“It’s as if a bomb had exploded in our neighborhood”, told Agence France-Presse Alex Goodman, a resident of Mayfield.
