A couple from Tennessee (United States) broke a record by giving birth to a baby from a frozen embryo 27 years ago, which shows that fertilized embryos could be preserved “Indefinitely”, as a spokesman for the fertilization center that carried out the process told Efe this Friday.
Tina and Ben Gibson broke their own record with the birth of Molly, as they already have another daughter that was conceived from a brother embryo that was frozen 24 years.
The insemination of this donated embryo was carried out by the National Embryo Donation Center (NEDC), a fertility center with a religious focus, according to the organization itself.
“Molly Everette Gibson spent more than 27 years as a frozen embryo and preserved, marking the only known record for the embryo that has been frozen the longest and has led to birth ”, it said in the statement.
Mark Mellinger, spokesman for the NEDC, told Efe this Friday that this confirms that “As long as embryos are properly frozen and stored, we believe they can remain ‘good’ indefinitely.”
NEDC focuses on saving fertilized embryos that will be discarded to donate to couples with fertility problems.
Molly’s embryo was frozen in 1992 and could have been born at any time in the last 27 years.
It is the genetic sister of the previous one, which comes from an embryo frozen at the same time, was born after 24 years in conservation, which also shows that equipment used in the 90’s they were advanced enough to ensure the safety of the process.
Fertilized embryos are implanted in the mother’s uterus and are one of the cheapest alternatives for couples with fertility problems.
“This is proof that nno embryo should be discarded and not considered ‘old’”said NEDC Director Jeffrey Keenan.
