At the border between the United States and Mexico, a sports utility vehicle (SUV) carrying 25 adults and children collided with a tractor trailer filled with gravel, killing at least 13 people.
According to Reuters on the 3rd (local time), the accident occurred on Highway 115 near El Centro in southern California, 10 miles (16.1 km) north of the US-Mexico border.
The accident vehicle is Ford’s SUV, the Xpedition, which varies depending on the trim and model, but is generally a vehicle with 5 to 8 people on board.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) said it was unclear how fast the cars were going in the accident or whether the SUV observed the stop sign before entering the intersection. CHP reported that minors between the ages of 20 and 55, including the deceased and related SUV Unja, were also injured at the age of 16. The tractor trailer driver was also seriously injured and hospitalized. According to the broadcast footage of an American media outlet NBC affiliate, the accident vehicle was crushed next to the driver’s seat of a white truck with the words’Haven and Son’ written on it. According to the CHP, some occupants escaped from the vehicle and died on the sidewalk, while others were inside the vehicle. The CHP did have US Customs and Border Protection agents and a Spanish interpreter, but did not reveal whether the SUV occupants were migrant workers or people who crossed the Mexican border in vehicles that exceeded the number of passengers.
A spokesperson for the CHP said most of the survivors spoke Spanish. The CHP said it was working with the Mexican consulate to identify who got in the vehicle and to inform families of the deceased.
The victims of the accident were taken to the Elcent Regional Medical Center. Earlier, hospital officials said that 27 people were aboard the SUV and 15 were killed. However, the CHP said there were 25 passengers and 13 deaths.
