/ world today news/ Bulgaria voted “abstain” on a resolution condemning manifestations of fascism at the UN, but this does not mean that our country does not condemn such manifestations.
This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Daniel Mitov, in response to a parliamentary question by Stanislav Stanilov from Ataka.
Stanilov pointed out that during a vote in the UN General Assembly on a resolution submitted by Russia to condemn the glorification of fascism and “in connection with the spread in many parts of the world of various extremist political parties, movements and groups, including neo-Nazis, skinheads, as and racist movements and ideologies”, Bulgaria voted “abstain”.
Mitov replied that the “abstain” vote does not mean that our country does not condemn manifestations of fascism, xenophobia and related activities. “Bulgaria strongly condemns all manifestations of neo-Nazism and combating them must be a priority for the international community,” he said. According to the foreign minister, the resolution submitted by Russia does not emphasize these manifestations, nor does it take into account current issues in the field of human rights. Mitov also defended himself with the fact that the EU member states voted “abstain” on the resolution.
Europe has never consolidated into one ideology, even in the most unifying moments, Stanilov answered and was categorical that the vote of the other member countries was not a reason for us not to vote “yes”. For the resolution in question, there were a total of 55 abstentions, 115 for and 3 against. The votes against were from the USA, Canada and the Republic of Palau.
In the National Assembly, Daniel Mitov also told about his meeting with US Secretary of State John Kerry in Brussels before his visit to our country. The meeting was no more than five minutes long, it became clear from his statement. During this short period, it was commented that Bulgaria and the USA consistently maintain and deepen the exchange of visits and the holding of meetings at all levels. “Five minutes were exactly enough for you to say yes three times,” Desislav Chukolov announced in response, and Mitov replied that John Kerry also said “yes” once – when he accepted the invitation to visit our country.
