In the thin iPhone 17 Air, Apple could use a new OLED display technology for the first time

With the iPhone 17 Slim expected in 2025, which may become part of Apple’s “Air family”, a slim figure is the top priority and so it is not surprising that thanks to the integration of a new display technology, space can also potentially be saved in the OLED material, as an industry newspaper recently reported.

In 11 months at the latest we will finally know whether all the rumors about the replacement of the iPhone 16 Plus (here for example available on Amazon) will come true with a thinner iPhone 17 Slim. Prominent analysts also assume that instead of the iPhone 17 Plus, a completely redesigned and significantly thinner iPhone will be waiting for us next year – potentially a kind of iPhone 17 Air.

In order to save space, this will not be a Pro model, at least in the first generation of the product, but the price is likely to be significantly higher than what you currently have to spend on the iPhone 16 Plus – according to previous leaks. Quite consistent with these rumors reported the Taiwanese trade publication Digitimes (via MacRumors) now also about the plans of the local display manufacturer Novatek, which wants to start mass production of a new type of OLED display in the second quarter of 2025.

Thanks to TDDI technology (Touch and Display Driver Integration), OLED display panels should become slightly thinner, which fits ideally with Apple’s potential iPhone plans. In fact, it is speculated that Apple will be one of Novatek’s first customers, and the production plan also fits in perfectly with a potential iPhone 17 Air launch in September. The new displays could be used in other Apple products in addition to iPhones and would even be suitable for foldable iPhones and iPads, according to the report.
