The Rudozem border checkpoint may be ready in August, the new deadline for completing the checkpoint, and the final has been postponed twice over the years due to technical reasons.
Initially, the construction activities were to be completed in May 2020. After two consecutive extensions, the deadline is currently August 2021.
There are three approaches to the border crossing. The main one is the road that passes through Srednogortsi-Rudozem (about 29 km from Smolyan). The section is under construction and the expectations are that by the opening of the checkpoint it will be completed. A few years ago, the road between Smilyan and Rudozem (22 km) was drilled and built, which is actually the shortest approach from the regional town to Rudozem.
The third is on the panoramic road through the peak Srednogorets (22 km), which is in very poor condition. A complete working project has been prepared for the rehabilitation of this section and the construction is to be assigned.
In December, the access road to the border control site was fully paved. The access road is over 800 meters long and 10.5 meters wide, in three lanes. Asphalt was also laid in the buffer parking lot.
The constructions of the three buildings, provided for border and health control, as well as of the hall for thorough customs inspection are being built on the site of the border checkpoint. The electrical, water supply and sewerage installations are being built, 24Smolyan writes.
