A congressional delegation led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is expected to visit Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan during the visit. The press release from Pelosi’s office made no mention of Taiwan. It is indicated that the focus of the trip will be mutual security, economic partnership and democratic governance in the region.
Pelosi said the delegation will hold high-level meetings to discuss how the two sides can continue to advance common interests and values, including peace and security, economic growth and trade, and other issues.
Pelosi’s visit has provoked a sharp reaction from China, which has warned of strong retaliatory measures if Pelosi visits Taiwan. Chinese President Xi Jinping already warned his US counterpart Joe Biden this week that Washington must adhere to the “one China principle” and “those who play with fire will perish.”
