For the second week in a row, Latvia is in the first place in the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA) in terms of mortality with Covid-19 diagnosis, according to data compiled by the European Center for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC).

ECDC estimates of the situation in the previous two weeks from 28 February to 13 March show that there were 119 deaths per million population diagnosed with Covid-19 in Latvia. Although the mortality rate has decreased, in other EU and EEA countries the mortality rate from diagnosed Covid-19 has decreased faster and Latvia is currently the only country in the EU and the EEA where the mortality rate exceeds 100 cases.
The threshold of 90 deaths per million population is exceeded in Denmark and Bulgaria, while the average mortality rate diagnosed with Covid-19 in the EU and EEA countries in the previous two weeks was 32.1 cases per million population.
In Estonia, the mortality rate in the previous two weeks was 88 cases per million population and it is ranked 4th among the EU / EEA countries. Lithuania, on the other hand, has a death toll of 35.1 per million population and is currently ranked 15th among 30 EU / EEA countries after being diagnosed with Covid-19.
ECDC estimates of the situation in the previous two weeks also show that the cumulative incidence of Covid-19 per 100,000 population in Latvia was 4866.2 cases and that Latvia has fallen from 2nd to 4th place in the EU and EEA countries.
In Estonia, the incidence is 2,833.3 cases per 100,000 population, and it has dropped from 6th to 9th place in this indicator. Lithuania, with a morbidity rate of 2,367.1 cases per 100,000 population, has dropped from 9th to 11th place among 30 EU / EEA countries.
In the EU / EEA countries, the average incidence of Covid-19 is 1,564.8 cases per 100,000 population.
The highest incidence in the EU / EEA in the last two weeks has been in Iceland, with 10,033.4 cases per 100,000 population. In contrast, the threshold of 5,000 cases is exceeded in Austria and Liechtenstein.
In the last two weeks in Latvia, the infection rate among the population aged 65 and over has slightly decreased to 2351.2 cases per 100,000 population. The EU / EEA average is 895.2 cases per 100,000 population.
Latvia is also above the EU / EEA average in terms of hospital occupancy. During the previous week in the EU / EEA, the proportion of patients infected with Covid-19 in hospitals was 22.1 per 100,000 population. In Latvia, this indicator was 54.9 cases last week.
