The sale of garden products is very fragmented in our country. In addition to garden centers – where 20 percent of the total is sold – many other sellers are trying to get their share. Such as web stores such as BOL, VidaXL, Gadero and Kees Smit Tuinmeubelen, stores such as Ikea and Action and DIY stores such as Hornbach, Praxis and Gamma. Pet shops and supermarkets also try to appeal to the garden enthusiast.
“If we add everything together, in 2021 you are talking about sales of an estimated almost 9 billion euros in products for the garden, pets and flowers and plants for indoor/outdoor use,” says researcher Danny van den Burg of GfK. “And that is 5 percent more than in the first corona year 2020.”
People mainly go to garden centers for plants and trees, pots, vases and bowls. Garden enthusiasts mainly buy garden furniture, fences, garden sheds and garden tools at hardware stores. “Pure online stores are about products such as barbecues, garden lighting and garden furniture,” says Van den Burg.
