She is often tempted, and shopping expenses are far higher than she thought.
The video below shows how shocked Kristiansen is when she realizes how much money she spends on shopping in one year:
Siri Kristiansen works as a presenter in Radio Norway and is a stand-up comedian. She has participated in a number of programs on TV, including “Kompani Lauritzen”, “Skal vi danse” and “71 degrees north – Norway’s toughest celebrity”.
This week she is on the TV3 / Viaplay program “In the pocket of Silje”, where consumer economist Silje Sandmæl in DNB will help her clean up her finances.
Kristiansen spends a lot of money on clothes.
– Sometimes I come to the checkout without having looked at the price, and then it is terribly much more expensive than I could have imagined in my wildest imagination. Then I dare not say it, and just have to buy the garment, says Kristiansen in the program.
In one year, Kristiansen spent NOK 92,520 on clothes in physical stores. She drew the card a full 106 times.
If we look at the exterior as a whole, which includes shopping in stores and online, skin, nails and hair, the sum is far higher.
Kristiansen spent a total of NOK 225,500 on such an exterior in one year.

Many small amounts in everyday life
Now that Kristiansen is on her way to work, she likes to buy coffee with her – and preferably also carbonated water. Many small sums quickly turn into large amounts.
Until Sandmæl visited Kristiansen, she bought coffee every weekday, and Sandmæl then estimated that it cost almost 12,000 kroner a year on coffee alone. If we count water with carbon dioxide in addition, which she bought now and then, the sum was about 18,500 kroner a year.
It went with many small amounts otherwise in everyday life as well, and within a year she also spent money on the following:
- Parking 16,000 kroner
- Playstation games for the kids / App store: 17,000 kroner
- Flowers 24,300 kroner
The biggest items were interior, exterior and food. On the interior post, including flowers, she spent 91,500 kroner in one year.

Matposten is the largest, and in one year it went with 322,500 kroner. Here, however, it is worth noting that Sandmæl also included Kristiansen’s husband Espen’s consumption of grocery chains.
Large savings potential
In total, on the item interior, exterior and food, Sandmæl thought that Kristiansen could save 270,000 kroner. This also includes cuts in her husband Espen’s consumption of groceries.
Two months after Sandmæl visited for the first time, Kristiansen had managed to save 45,000 kroner.
Kristiansen has started shopping for coffee at the petrol station, and bringing water and a packed lunch to work. She has also calmed down shopping.
– I have not bought any clothes, she says.
In addition, Kristiansen and her husband have started shopping weekly, and use a shopping list and a joint food card.

Need awareness of spending money
Something else can learn from the review of Kristiansen’s finances is raising awareness of spending and saving, Sandmæl believes.
– I think many can recognize themselves in this program, especially the lies you tell yourself. You think you do a lot, but when you go through the spending, it shows something else, she says to Nettavisen.
Kristiansen and the man thought that they shopped weekly before Sandmæl came to visit, but it turned out that they shopped far more times a week than they claimed.
– You should not believe, but you should know. Then it is easier to make a move, says Sandmæl.
Raising awareness of Kristiansen’s use of money was an important step, but so was raising awareness of the location of savings.
– Siri only saved in a savings account, but it is stupid to leave all the money there for all years. Then they lose value, they say.
