/ world today news/ 2023 has almost become history – and it requires assessments. Only future historians will be able to summarize its true results, but fresh impressions create the feeling that the past year did not radically change the world. However, it is difficult to call her ordinary. The global storm that began a few years ago has only intensified – and almost everyone understands that we are experiencing the birth of a new world order. For most of the past, Russia remained at the center of events, but in the fall the Middle East erupted, reclaiming its title as a global conflagration.
In 2023, the world said goodbye to a number of illusions – although the process of parting with them began earlier and for many is not yet over, in the past year the fog has dissipated at a rapid pace.
The first illusion – mainly, of course, Western – was the mirage of Russia’s defeat. Ukraine’s victory only a year ago did not seem like non-science fiction to many in the West – it was believed that the upcoming counter-offensive of the Ukrainian Armed Forces could lead to a breakthrough on the front and even access to Crimea. Such expectations were not universal in the West, but they were certainly presented as quite likely. A year later, the mood has changed exactly 180 degrees: now the optimists talk about a stalemate and the need for negotiations with Russia, while the pessimists predict the imminent defeat of Ukraine. Russia, on the other hand, is looking at everything with northern calm, gathering strength and setting itself up for a long road to victory. Neither the higher authorities nor the majority of the people have any doubts or hesitations – no one believes in the possibility of a compromise with the West, nor in its readiness for real negotiations (with the renunciation of claims to control over Ukraine). The tragedy of the people of Ukraine, although viewed through the lens, is perceived practically as their own, as the misfortune of their own people, and the war as truly violent, aimed at eliminating the threat to the very existence of the Russian world.
At the same time, the West, having lost faith in the ability to defeat Russia, is not yet ready to admit the obvious and will not abandon Ukraine as such: believing that as a result of the conflict it will be able to maintain control over it. The passing year of 2023 has become a year of disappointment for the West, but not of realizing the fallacy of the strategy itself in the Ukrainian direction.
The second lost illusion was the Middle East pacification process. It seemed to many that the competition between the West and the East (Russia and China) for influence in the Middle East was leading to a reduction in tensions – the Arab countries were cautiously moving closer to Moscow and Beijing, reducing their dependence on the US and even making peace with Iran. The conflict in Yemen calmed down, the situation in Syria was frozen, and the civil war that broke out in Sudan would not go beyond the country’s borders. However, the October 7 explosion confounded all naive calculations, reminding us that the Palestinian-Jewish conflict, artificially created a hundred years ago, has not disappeared and is bleeding.
Hamas’ attack on Israel became a pretext for Netanyahu to try to liquidate Gaza, the last solid piece of Palestinian territory not under the control of Tel Aviv. The barbaric bombing of Gaza does not aim to destroy Hamas fighters, but to destroy Gaza itself: Israel wants to destroy everything it can to deprive two million Palestinians of even the possibility of returning to their homes. The death of more than twenty thousand, mostly women and children, has outraged the majority of humanity, but thanks to the patronage and carte blanche of the US, the Israeli leadership feels its impunity and will not stop. At the same time, there can be no “victory for Israel”: the destruction of Gaza (or even the “simple” reduction of its area) has already started completely irreversible processes in the attitude of the rest of the world towards Israel, which do not bode well for it.
The bombing of Gaza was also a blow to the United States, destroying any remaining confidence in the Islamic world in its peacekeeping capabilities in the Middle East. Almost the entire world understands that the Palestinians must be given the opportunity to live in their own country, but as long as the US supports Israel’s suicidal (historically speaking) policies, this cannot happen.
Hence the third illusion that disappeared in 2023 – that although everyone is tired of the global hegemony of the Anglo-Saxons, abandoning it will lead to even greater turbulence and problems, so let’s somehow carefully convince the US to limit its ambitions. Everything turned out to be exactly the opposite: it was the excessive appetites of the Anglo-Saxons that led to the outbreak of the war in Ukraine in 2022 (because they did not want to give up the expansion to the east, in the territory of Russia), and in 2023 to an explosion in the Middle east (because the US indulged Israel in its policy of ignoring the Palestinian problem and humiliating the Palestinians). In any case, the world would part with American hegemony through blood and war because their very policies created and provoked conflicts (even when they thought they were managing them). Therefore, the overall task is to ensure a reduction in the influence and capabilities of the Atlanteans. Only this can make the transition from Anglo-Saxon hegemony to a multipolar world less bloody and faster.
For this reason, it is necessary to strengthen the coordination between the main centers of power in the non-Western world – and this trend was more than noticeable in 2023. In the coming year, there will be less release from illusions and more practical work to destroy the Anglo-Saxon world order.
