CONTEXT:

Since the spring of 2020, Latvia, along with other European countries, experienced several outbreaks of Covid-19.

At the end of 2021, the omicron spread of the virus began to cause concern, and later a significant wave of morbidity was experienced, while the situation in hospitals remained stable. As the situation improves, most of the Covid-19 epidemiological safety measures have been canceled from April 2022.

The lowest point of the incidence of Covid-19 in Latvia was at the beginning of June 2022, but after Midsummer, a faster increase in prevalence resumed. This was linked to human behavior and the spread of a new subtype of the virus. At the end of August, it was reported that the increase in the incidence of Covid-19 has passed both in Europe and in Latvia. There was an increase in incidence in mid-September, but the incidence decreased again in mid-October.

Uga Dumpis, an infectious disease specialist at the Paula Stradins Clinical University Hospital, stated that the third wave of Covid-19 morbidity is likely to be expected this winter.

Meanwhile, at the beginning of December 2022, the beginning of the influenza epidemic has been announced in Latvia. A rise in influenza incidence was observed around Christmas time, with predictions that the prevalence of the disease will reach even greater proportions.

As the number of upper respiratory tract infections increased, the Emergency Medical Service temporarily went into emergency mode, but abandoned it after three weeks.
