It will be stormy on Monday night – gusts of up to 100 km/h possible

MeteoSwiss announces gusts with a speed of more than 100 kilometers per hour in the lowlands. Snow is also to be expected.

The weather forecast holds bad prospects for winter sports enthusiasts. In all of Switzerland north of the Alps and thus also in Lucerne, strong winds are to be expected at the end of the weekend, which could make it impossible for the mountain railways to operate. Snowfall is also announced. Meteo Switzerland issued a warning for stormy winds between Sunday noon and Monday noon on Saturday.

The danger map from Meteo Schweiz shows where strong winds can be expected. Orange areas mean danger level 3, i.e. considerable danger.

The west wind will increase during Sunday. In the lowlands, maximum gusts of 60 to 100 kilometers per hour are expected, in the higher regions the wind can reach speeds of 100 to 130 km/h. Gusts of up to 160 km/h can occur on exposed peaks, such as Meteonews writes.

“The storm is a little stronger than the previous storms of the current winter, but a long way from the extreme winter storms of the past (like Lothar 1999). Nevertheless, some damage (snapping trees or covered bricks) is quite possible with such wind peaks. »

Flower pots and empty rubbish bins should therefore be brought to safety in good time throughout Central Switzerland. Despite the nasty weather, the temperature in the region on Sunday will remain mild at around five to ten degrees. In addition, around half a meter of fresh snow can be expected at high altitudes in the Northern Alps. (se/mha)
