In the next 7 days, soil moisture will improve – Agro Plovdiv – 2024-09-13 07:48:33

Forecast for the period 13 – 19 September 2024.

Dukena Joleva, agrometeorologist at NIMH

After the prolonged drought, during the past seven-day period, in many places in the country, precipitation of economic significance fell – over 30 – 40l/m² (Silistra, Varna, Dobrich, Stara Zagora, Burgas, Haskovo, Sandanski). These rains were also late for the late field crops, which, due to the lack of soil moisture and excessive summer temperatures, ended their development much earlier than usual.

And during the next seven-day period, the agro-meteorological conditions will be determined by unsustainable weather. During the period, rainfall is forecast, an improvement of the moisture reserves in the upper soil layers and the conditions for conducting seasonal tillage. Due to the drought, the pre-sowing treatments of the areas were postponedintended for sowing with winter rapeseed, a crop requiring precise tillage. For this reason, in many places in the country, rape seeding will take place after the optimal agrotechnical terms. They expire at the end of the second ten days of September.

During most days of the period, the forecasted cool weather, with frequent rainfall, will create conditions for infections and development of pathogens on late agricultural crops: late brown rot on fruit trees, gray rot on grapes, mange on vegetable crops. In the second ten days of September, the cabbage grown for autumn production should be monitored for pests: the caterpillars of the cabbage butterfly, the cabbage moth, the cabbage moth, and at a density above the threshold of economic harm (3-5 caterpillars per plant) treatment with insecticides with a short quarantine period.

The next period is suitable for sowing spinach etc. leafy vegetables, for autumn production
