Colombian singer Shakira’s new song about her ex-partner, the famous soccer player Gerard Piqué, with whom she broke up last year, is breaking records on YouTube. The music video for Out of Your League has garnered more than 63 million views in 24 hours, making it the most viewed Latin American song in a single day on the site, the BBC News website reported.
In the song, Shakira mentions Piqué’s new partner, who, according to Spanish media, broke up their relationship. “I’ve got the price of two 22-year-old girls. You traded a Ferrari for a (Renault) Twingo, you traded a Rolex for a Casio,” sings the pop star. The 45-year-old singer broke up with 35-year-old Piqué last year after more than ten years of life together. The couple has two children together.
The singer also notes in the song that “a she-wolf like her is not for the faint of heart”. “I was out of your league, that’s why you’re with someone like you,” she sings, suggesting that her gym-loving ex should also spend some time training his brain.
In addition to puns on Piqué and his new girlfriend, Shakira also mentions her mother-in-law, the media and ongoing problems with the Spanish tax authorities, who claim she has not paid 14.5 million euros (roughly CZK 321 million) in taxes. “You left me with a mother-in-law as a neighbor, with the press at my door and with a debt at the lamb’s,” he sings in the song.
According to Spanish prosecutors, Shakira lived with her family in Barcelona from 2012 to 2014, meaning she should have paid tax on her worldwide income in Spain for those years. If she is convicted, they demand eight years behind bars and a fine of more than 23 million euros. But the singer has accused the country’s tax authorities of waging a “vicious media campaign” against her and insists she owes them nothing.
The song has racked up more than 63.5 million views on YouTube as of this morning, making it the most-watched new Latin music video in the platform’s history and making headlines around the world. The four-minute pop track is the first collaboration between Shakira and Argentinian producer and DJ Bizarrapa.
It’s not Shakira’s first song about breaking up with Piqué. Monotonia came out three months ago, but it was more about heartbreak than revenge. Piqué did not react to the new hit.
