To: “Council decides on energy concept”, BZ from July 29th:
The weather experts never tire of warning us of increasingly frequent and violent storms. How many century floods was that now? And the city of Freiburg is cheerfully planning a new district in the middle of a natural flood plain. Our ancestors went to build there. Oh yes – earth and gravel are poured out. In which deep holes for cellars and underground garages are then dug and the surface is sealed with houses and streets.
In the last few weeks we have all seen what the water masses do with a few meters of earth. But wait – the city is building a dike. But the groundwater also rises inside the dike. And even if the dyke holds, Dietenbach is under water. And the water is not gone. If it cannot get into its natural floodplain, the neighboring districts are flooded. And the local council is debating energy concepts! The rude awakening will come for the proud high-tech house builder when the insurance company rejects natural hazards insurance due to the natural circumstances. And the town council didn’t know anything about any of this. Hannes Melichar, Freiburg
