The virus is actively circulating in our department, much more than before. All indicators are on the rise, in particular the incidence rate. Today it amounts to 248, when it was 97, a month ago, early January. Several factors may explain this increased circulation of the virus, according to Public Health France.
The incidence rate below 100 in early January
A month ago, France Bleu Gascgone explained to you that the virus was circulating less in the department: at the very beginning of January, the incidence rate fell below 100. But a month later, the incidence rate has more than doubled : it went from 97 to 248 positive cases per 1000 inhabitants.
According to Laurent Filleul, head of the French Public Health unit in New Aquitaine, several reasons can explain this rebound. First, at the beginning of January, the figures concerning the end of year festive period were not yet known. The gatherings at Christmas and New Year in the Landes may have increased the circulation of the virus.
Ensuite, “If the incidence rate is increasing, it is also because we are testing massively in the Landes. More than 3,400 tests per 100,000 inhabitants is enormous”, says Laurent Filleul. Finally, there is new variants of Covid19. Even if Public Health France has no data to date concerning the Landes, the agency notes an increase in traffic in several departments: an increase which could therefore also be explained by these variants, which are much more contagious.
Sharp increase in incidence rate among young people
According to Public Health France, we are now seeing a sharp increase in the incidence rate among young people under 15 years old. But, where the incidence increases the most, it is in 15 – 44 year olds. It is therefore in the part of the working population, which works and travels, that the virus circulates the most. “But all age groups are contaminated, ensures the public agency. And all are concerned by an increase in the circulation of the virus.
The Landes, the second department of Nouvelle-Aquitaine where the virus circulates the most
The incidence rate in the Landes, 248, is just behind that of the Dordogne, which reaches 275, and just before Deux-Sèvres, which reaches 222. Mays the head of the regional office of Public Health France recalls that “the epidemic does not respect administrative boundaries. We look department by department, but in reality the incidence rate is increasing throughout the region. “
