In just three weeks, Austria will elect a new parliament. The importance of sport for community, health, society, children, etc. will probably remain a secondary concern among the 183 National Council members, even though it also affects the economy, tourism, taxes, employment, naturalization and education. But there are 15,000 clubs with over two million members. These are voters, important voices – but what arguments will the parties use to lure them to the ballot box?
The sports spokespersons of the ÖVP, SPÖ, Greens, Neos, FPÖ and KPÖ answered a survey by “Sport Austria”. The summary of the key points shows differences in their reality.
Children and school
According to a WHO study, 80 percent of children in Austria exercise for less than an hour a day. The installation of the “Daily Exercise Unit” in compulsory schools and kindergartens, organized by umbrella organizations and Sport Austria in cooperation with clubs and the Ministry of Sport and Education, was a success in the pilot project.
