In the Kremlin ‘for life’: Putin signs law allowing him to remain in president for another 15 years

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday signed a law allowing him to serve as head of state for another two-six-year term, remaining in the current chair until 2036.

Last year, the 68-year-old Kremlin host, who has been in power for more than two decades, proposed an amendment to the constitution that included, among other things, a provision restricting the president’s term of office.

These constitutional amendments were then approved in a referendum declared by the opposition to be an absolute farce.

The relevant bill, which will allow Putin to run for another after the end of his current term in 2024, was approved by the Russian parliament in March.

Putin was first elected president in 2000 and has held two consecutive terms.

In 2008, in a so-called handshake, Putin became prime minister, replacing his comrade Dmitry Medvedev, who in turn sat in the Kremlin.

The opposition points out that the aim of the “handwriting” was to keep the actual reins of power in Putin’s hands, and as already predicted, in 2012 Putin returned to the chair.

In the meantime, however, the constitution has been amended to extend the four-year term of the president to six years.

In 2018, Putin was elected for another six-year term.

The law now signed, according to Putin’s opponents, will allow him to remain “forever” in the Kremlin.
