In the heat of the Israel-Hezbollah War, the UN and Lebanon’s PM call for an end to it

Jakarta

The United Nations (UN) and Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati called for de-escalation after attacks both between Israel and Hezbollah. The UN urges both parties to cease and desist.

“Call on all parties to cease and desist from further escalating actions,” the joint statement said, describing the latest developments as “alarming”, reported by AFP, Sunday (25 /8/2024).

“A return to the cessation of hostilities, followed by the implementation of UN Security Council resolution 1701, is the only sustainable way forward,” the statement said.

The resolution ended the 2006 conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. In addition to insisting that the Lebanese army and UN peacekeeping forces are the only armed forces deployed in southern Lebanon.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati told ministers at an emergency meeting that he had maintained a series of contacts with Lebanese allies to stop the escalation.

“What is necessary is to stop the Israeli aggression first, and to implement Resolution 1701,” a statement from his office said.

Mikati also confirmed Lebanon’s support for international efforts that could end the deadlock in Gaza.

Iran-backed Hezbollah has occasionally traded with Israel to support its ally Hamas since the Palestinian militant group’s Oct. 7 attack on Israel began the Gaza war.
