In the first half of the year, Mexico consolidates its position as the largest supplier to the US

Mexico City. In the first half of 2024, Mexico established itself as the United States’ top trading partner and main service provider, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Census Bureau reported on Tuesday.

According to data from the country’s public agency, bilateral trade between the two countries in the first half of the year amounted to $415.4 billion, equivalent to 16 percent of the $2.594 billion that the US trades with the world.

Canada came in second with $382.5 billion, representing 14.7 percent of U.S. global trade, and China with $269.2 billion, equivalent to 14.7 percent of the world’s largest economic power.

Bilateral trade between Mexico and the United States, according to figures from the Census Bureau, is at unprecedented levels for a similar period, and is 5 percent higher than the $396 billion reported in the first half of last year.

For the past two years, there has been a marked realignment of imports and exports worldwide, mainly due to the trade war between the United States and China, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the relocation of global value chains.
