The actor Marc Hosemann (54) has been awarded the Ernst Lubitsch Prize by the Film Journalists’ Club. The prize, which is named after the director Ernst Lubitsch (1892-1947) and honors the best comedic performance in a German-language film, was presented to Hosemann on Sunday at a ceremony in a Berlin hotel.
The actor received the award “for his portrayal of death personified in the film “Sophia, Death and I”, which was both humorous and melancholy, the organizers explained their decision. Hosemann had already demonstrated his comedic talent last year in the film “A Celebration of Life”. “There is hardly a viewer who is not familiar with Marc Hosemann because of his versatility,” the reasoning continued.
Award winner Hosemann emphasised: “Lubitsch’s films such as ‘The Oyster Princess’ and ‘To Be or Not to Be’ have influenced me in many ways and are still role models today! I wish Ernst Lubitsch were still here today! It is therefore a great honour and pleasure for me to receive the award.”
Hosemann has acted in productions such as “4 Blocks” and “Babylon Berlin”. He can be seen as a branch manager in the comedy series “Die Discounter”. He was also a member of the ensemble at the Berliner Volksbühne for many years.
The Film Journalists’ Club awarded a special prize to director Radek Wegrzyn for his documentary film “Miss Holocaust Survivor.” It is about an unusual beauty contest in Haifa, Israel, in which Holocaust survivors take part. Wegrzyn delivered a moving portrait, it was said.
